The key problem in routing is to map from an O/R Address onto an MTA (next hop). This shall be an MTA which in some sense is "nearer" to the destination UA. This is done repeatedly until the message can be directly delivered to the recipient UA. This memo defines an Experimental Protocol for the Internet community.

The Internet X.400 community (i.e., GO-MHS) currently lacks a distributed mechanism providing dynamic updating and management of message routing information. The IETF MHS-DS Working Group has specified an approach for X.400 Message Handling Systems to perform message routing using OSI Directory Services. The MHS-DS approach has been successfully tested in a number of local environments.

This memo describes a proposed Internet Pilot Project that seeks to prove the MHS-DS approach on a larger scale. The results of this pilot will then be used to draw up recommendations for a global deployment.

These recommendations can only be considered a starting point in the quest to create a global production qualityX.500 infrastructure. For there to be a true "production quality"X.500 infrastructure more work must be done, including a transition from the 1988 X.500 (plus some Internet extensions) to the 1993 X.500 standard (including the '93 replication and knowledge model). This document does not discuss this transition.

The X.500 directory provides a powerful mechanism for storing and retrieving information about objects of interest. To interpret the information stored in the directory, the schema must be known to all the components of the directory. Presently, there are no means other than ftp to distribute schema information across the Internet. This is proving to be a severe constraint as the Directory is growing.This document presents a solution to the schema distribution problem using the existing mechanisms of the directory. A naming scheme for naming schema objects and a meta-schema for storing schema objects is presented. The procedures for fetching unknown schema from the directory at runtime are described.

This memo provides a mechanism whereby messages conforming to the[RFC 1521] ("MIME") specification can convey presentational information. It specifies a new "Content-Disposition" header, optional and valid for any [RFC 1521] entity ("message" or "body part"). Two values for this header are described in this memo; one for the ordinary linear presentation of the body part, and another to facilitate the use of mail to transfer files. It is expected that more values will be defined in the future, and procedures are defined for extending this set of values.

This document is intended as an extension to [RFC 1521]. As such, the reader is assumed to be familiar with [RFC 1521], and [RFC 822]. The information presented herein supplements but does not replace that found in those documents.

A Uniform Resource Locator (URL) is a compact representation of the location and access method for a resource available via the Internet.When embedded within a base document, a URL in its absolute form may contain a great deal of information which is already known from the context of that base document's retrieval, including the scheme, network location, and parts of the url-path. In situations where the base URL is well-defined and known to the parser (human or machine), it is useful to be able to embed URL references which inherit that context rather than re-specifying it in every instance. This document defines the syntax and semantics for such Relative UniformResource Locators.

MD5 is an authentication algorithm, which has been proposed as the default authentication option in IPv6. When enabled, the MD5 algorithm operates over the entire data packet, including header.This RFC addresses how fast MD5 can be implemented in software and hardware, and whether it supports currently available IP bandwidth.MD5 can be implemented in existing hardware technology at 256 Mbps, and in software at 87 Mbps. These rates cannot support current IP rates, e.g., 100 Mbps TCP and 130 Mbps UDP over ATM. If MD5 cannot support existing network bandwidth using existing technology, it will not scale as network speeds increase in the future. This RFC is intended to alert the IP community about the performance limitations of MD5, and to suggest that alternatives be considered for use in high speed IP implementations.

This document describes the registration policies for the top-level domain ".GOV". Thus far, Federal Agencies and their subsidiaries have registered without any guidance. This has resulted in multiple registrations for Federal Agencies and naming schemes that do not facilitate responsiveness to the public. This document fixes this by restricting registrations to coincide with the approved structure of the US government. The document cited, FIPS 95-1, provides a standard recognized structure into which domain registrations for top-level domains. The IANA requires that an organization/country apply for and get a 2 letter code from ISO/ITU (e.g., US for UnitedStates) for additional top-level registration.

As a side effect, this reduces the number of .GOV level registrations and reduces the workload on the Internic.

Though the ISO character set standard of ISO 10646 is specified reasonably well about European characters, it is not so useful in an fully internationalized environment.

For the practical use of ISO 10646, a lot of external profiling such as restriction of characters, restriction of combination of characters and addition of language information is necessary.

This memo provides information on such profiling, along with charset names to each profiled instance.

Though all the effort is done to make the resulting charset as useful10646 based charset as possible, the result is not so good. So, the charsets defined in this memo are only for reference purpose and its use for practical purpose is strongly discouraged.

1. Mapping from a key to a value (or set of values), as might be done in a table lookup.

2. Mapping from a distinguished name to an associated value (or values), where the values are not defined by the owner of the entry. This is achieved by use of a directory subtree.

These techniques were developed for supporting MHS use of Directory[2], but are specified separately as they have more general applicability.

This document describes the encoding used in electronic mail [RFC822] and network news [RFC1036] messages over the Internet. The 7-bit representation of GB 2312 Chinese text was specified by Fung Fung Lee of Stanford University [Lee89] and implemented in various software packages under different platforms (see appendix for a partial list of the available software packages that support this encoding method). It is further tested and used in the usenet newsgroups alt.chinese.text and chinese.* as well as various other network forums with considerable success. Future extensions of this encoding method can accommodate additional GB character sets and other east asian language character sets [Wei94].

The name given to this encoding is "HZ-GB-2312", which is intended to be used in the "charset" parameter field of MIME headers (see [MIME1] and [MIME2]).

MIME, an acronym for "MultipurposeInternet Mail Extensions", defines the format of the contents ofInternet mail messages and provides for multi-part textual and non- textual message bodies. The new content types are subtypes of multipart: signed and encrypted. Each will contain two body parts: one for the protected data and one for the control information necessary to remove the protection. The type and contents of the control information body parts are determined by the value of the protocol parameter of the enclosing multipart/signed or multipart/encrypted content type, which is required to be present.

This document defines MIME Object Security Services (MOSS), a protocol that uses the multipart/signed and multipart/encrypted framework [7] to apply digital signature and encryption services toMIME objects. The services are offered through the use of end-to-end cryptography between an originator and a recipient at the application layer. Asymmetric (public key) cryptography is used in support of the digital signature service and encryption key management.Symmetric (secret key) cryptography is used in support of the encryption service. This RFC suggests a simple way for delivering wireless messages, both one and two-way, to appropriate receiving devices. In its simplest form, SNPP provides a simple way to implement a "shim" between theInternet and a TAP/IXO paging terminal. In its level 3 form, it provides an easy-to-use (and build) method for communicating and receiving end-to-end acknowledgments and replies from two-way messaging devices (such as ReFLEX units).

Gateways supporting this protocol, as well as SMTP, have been in use for well over a year at several commercial paging companies, and private businesses. Client software supporting this protocol has become widespread, and is being integrated into many of the new paging and messaging products being built. In addition to commercial software, email filters and SNPP client software for Unix and Windows(WikiPage) are available at no cost. Please contact the author for more information.

Earlier versions of this specification were reviewed by IESG members and the "822 Extensions" Working Group. They preferred an alternate strategy, as discussed under "Relationship to Other IETF Work", below.

The Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) is a simple markup language used to create hypertext documents that are platform independent. HTML documents are SGML documents with generic semantics that are appropriate for representing information from a wide range of domains. HTML markup can represent hypertext news, mail, documentation, and hypermedia; menus of options; database query results; simple structured documents with in-lined graphics; and hypertext views of existing bodies of information.

HTML has been in use by the World Wide Web (WWW) global information initiative since 1990. This specification roughly corresponds to the capabilities of HTML in common use prior to June 1994. HTML is an application of ISO Standard 8879:1986 Information Processing Text andOffice Systems; Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML).

The "text/html" Internet Media Type (RFC 1590) and MIME Content Type(RFC 1521) is defined by this specification.

When using MIME [MIME] to encapsulate a structured object that consist of many elements, for example an SGML [SGML] document, a single element may occur several times. An encapsulation normally maps each of the structured objects elements to a MIME entity. It is useful to include elements that occur multiple time exactly once. To accomplish that and to preserve the object structure it is desirable to unambiguously refer to another body part of the same message.

The existing MIME Content-Type Message/External-Body access-types allow a MIME entity (body-part) to refer to an object that is not in the message by specifying how to access that object. The Content-ID access method described in this document provides the capability to refer to an object within the message.
